Fire Vigilance at Grand Pic Saint-Loup

Pic Saint-Loup is one of the massifs in Hérault subject to fire risk vigilance established by the Hérault Prefecture from June 15 to September 30, 2026.
The Hérault Prefecture has decided to place all forested areas of the department under surveillance by establishing a prefectural decree limiting access to woods and forests to prevent fire risks. In addition to this Prefectural decree, some municipalities in the territory may also take similar measures by municipal decree aimed at restricting access to certain forest massifs in their exposed territories.
In case of a Red Vigilance (defined daily by the prefecture in the evening at 6 p.m. for the following day), access to the Massifs and forested areas of Grand Pic Saint-Loup will be prohibited for all outdoor activities (hiking, biking, climbing, picnicking, etc.). Note that access parking to these forest areas such as the Cazevieille parking lot and Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers will also be closed to all parking.
The Grand Pic Saint-Loup Tourist Office and its professionals are mobilizing to assist you in an awareness and monitoring process to ensure the safety of visitors.
How does it work?
The prefecture issues a daily notice in the form of a « risk level » expressed by a color (4 levels of risk, from green to red). In case of Red Vigilance on zones 3 or 4 of the map, the Massif of Pic Saint-Loup is closed to all outdoor leisure activities.
Therefore, before planning a walk, hike, or outdoor activity, consult the fire vigilance map for Hérault prepared daily at 6 p.m. or inquire with the concerned municipality or Tourist Office.

In addition to this Prefectural decree, some municipalities in the territory may also be prompted to implement similar measures to restrict access to certain forest massifs.

Why prohibit access to forest massifs?
To ensure the safety of visitors: in case of fire, the fire can spread very quickly and reach people on-site; it is a matter of ensuring the safety of individuals by excluding them from the most exposed areas.
To significantly limit the risk of fire: 90% of fires in summer have a human origin. 80% of fire outbreaks are in the immediate vicinity of roads, paths, and trails. Limiting traffic in the area in case of very high risk decreases the chances of fire outbreaks.
To optimize the action of security personnel: during high-risk periods, public safety personnel and resources are heavily solicited. By restricting access to forest massifs during periods of high fire sensitivity, we ensure the availability of firefighters for better coordination and effectiveness of rescue operations.
What is prohibited in case of red alert vigilance?
It is the circulation for leisure activities in the forest area, as defined by the decree map. The main access points to the Massif of Pic Saint-Loup, such as the parking lots of Cazevieille and Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers will then be closed.
However, in case of red alert, we ask our visitors not to go to any other massif during the alert and therefore to temporarily refrain from activities in forests and scrublands.
All other tourist activities are still possible: do not hesitate to discover on this site all the riches of our territory, its villages, museums, wine estates, restaurants and other leisure facilities.
Am I allowed to return to my accommodation in case of red vigilance?
Yes, public establishments remain open, provided they have fulfilled their fire safety clearing obligations.
Is tourism activity still possible in case of red vigilance?
Yes, the prohibition concerns access to the forest zones marked with red vigilance and the activities practiced in the concerned territory. In all other unmarked sectors, all other tourist activities are allowed.
Am I allowed to access forest massifs in case of orange vigilance?
Yes from a regulatory point of view. But, as the risk is higher than usual, your vigilance must also be heightened.
This is an opportunity to remind that one should NEVER make a fire in the forest, regardless of the weather conditions, even « very small » and no barbecue is tolerated, as the risk of fire spread is considerably higher when vegetation is dry.
There are also basic precautions: do not smoke, never empty an ashtray in nature, nor leave a bottle, which glass can create a magnifying effect and ignite underbrush. Do not carry out any work or other activity that might generate sparks. Do not bring any flammable products with you (fire starters, chemical or petrochemical products).
Can I be fined if I circulate in prohibited zones in case of red vigilance?
Yes, any person in possession of public authority (forest ranger, police officer, gendarme, etc.) is authorized to issue a ticket of 135 euros depending on your situation.
If you witness a fire outbreak, alert by calling 112, 18 or 114 (for hearing-impaired persons), try to locate the fire and take shelter.
