Grand Site de France

Great Site of France

The gorges of the Hérault shape a territory with a unique identity. A preserved spirit of the places that the Great Site of France approach aims to protect.

A preserved place

In the gorges of the Hérault, a classified site, the river has sculpted the landscape by carving through the limestone. With its multiple tributaries, this impetuous or seemingly calm river offers an enchanting setting rich in fauna and flora. A source of life, it has favored the movement and settlement of people; numerous traces testify to this ancient and current presence.

Between the Saint-Étienne d'Issensac Bridge and the Devil's Bridge, a very specific identity thus appears. A whole culture, a medieval history, irrigates these places punctuated by grand and varied landscapes and remarkable buildings such as Romanesque churches.
