Vallée de la Bueges

The Valley of Buèges

Born at the foot of the mountain of Séranne, Buèges offers, at its sources, the spectacle of an oasis of nature and peace with translucent waters.

An intimate and wild valley

Surrounded by massifs, the enclosed valley of the Buèges is not visible from anywhere, and few roads lead there. Starting from Saint-Martin-de-Londres, you have to climb to the Causse-de-la-Selle and then descend towards Saint-Jean-de-Buèges to discover an unexpected view of this place sheltered from prying eyes. The medieval village is nestled at the foot of a rocky peak while the imposing massif of the Séranne dominates the ensemble.

In the middle of this green landscape flows a river: the Buèges. It carves the bottom of the valley with its meanders, dotted by the three small communes it irrigates: Pégairolles-de-Buèges, Saint-Jean-de-Buèges and Saint-André-de-Buèges.

Authentic landscapes

The landscapes are varied: garrigue, vines, olive trees, meadows, woods, rivers, streams... They also tell a story. Buildings, walls, irrigation canals and others testify to a human presence in this land since ancient times, and its isolation has preserved its authenticity.

Take your time

Everything here encourages you to take your time. The time to discover, to pause, to meet… And to wander on foot or by bike to discover its multiple treasures. Many paths crisscross this place. Some easy walks bring you closer to the banks. A dream opportunity to swim, picnic and explore the unusual decor that reveals itself here and there with specific vegetation, colors, and different atmospheres.

You also encounter rocks of diverse and even surprising shapes: they have been sculpted by water which sometimes seeps into the limestone and becomes underground. This valley is a disorienting elsewhere, an enchanted interlude to savor the present moment and rediscover nature.
