Guillaume Domise has been shaping glass with dexterity and an unwavering passion for 18 years. It is in his workshop in Vacquières and at the Halle du Verre in Claret that he inspires the admiration of visitors.
Flame, poetry, and glassmaking...
He came to glassmaking through poetry. A former student of the Fine Arts, Guillaume Domise enjoyed writing verses of Apollinaire while playing with knives, scalpels, and pieces of broken glass. « During those years at the Fine Arts, I interned at a glass museum in the north of France. As soon as I had a fireball in my hands, I knew what I wanted to do in life: manipulate dangerous materials to extract poetry ».
An artistic journey.
He then followed a glassblower CAP and started his career with young glassmakers in Aveyron before settling in Vacquières in 2010. « I love seeking the perfect curve and playing with different boundaries, transitioning from liquid glass, extremely hot and opaque, to solid, cold, and transparent. It is a very meditative, even hypnotic work », he recounts.
At the glass museum in Claret, he creates impressive pieces in a few hours using the glassblowing technique, known as « at the flame » (or lamp). Unicorns, ducks, otters, dogs, grizzlies, penguins, roosters, and other ants take form under the astonished eyes of the visitors.
