Souls and soot
A graduate of the national school of photography, I have always been drawn to stories related to the human body. At the core of my creation, I seek subjects that showcase our anatomy. Here, it is about the Bear Festival, a very ancient carnival tradition of Haut-Vallespir, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, celebrated in February around Candlemas. It features men dressed in bear skins, roaming the streets with the intention of abducting a young shepherdess. Hunters then chase after them, capture them, and bring them to the village square. After being shaved, with the help of an axe, the bears transform into human beings. The Bear Festival has been inscribed in the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO since 2022.
