The village tells its story…

The lordship of Saint-Jean-de-Buègues has been mentioned since the year 990 in historical documents.

In the 12th century, a main tower was erected to serve as a control and surveillance point for the barony of Pégaïrolles. This keep was enlarged in the 13th and 14th centuries to become a real fortress, surrounded by a wall, arrow slits, a cistern, and a storage facility.

In 1813, the Turenne family sold the ruins of the castle, which had served as a stone quarry since 1749, to Hilaire de Girard du Lac, a glassmaker gentleman. In 1987, Joseph Sicard, mayor of Saint-Jean and owner of the castle, donated it to the municipality, and restoration works began in 1990.

Did you know?

According to an old local legend, a gigantic eagle flew over the Baulx castle and set its sights on the princess. In a matter of seconds, its powerful talons closed around the young woman. The king, terrified, ordered the villagers to rescue her, but all their efforts were in vain.

The legend tells that the eagle flew off with the princess, carrying with it a piece of the castle, thus explaining the presence of scattered stones around the site.
