Ascent of Pic Saint-Loup – Iconic hike and grand panorama
Overlooking the garrigue and watching over the plain at more than 650 meters above sea level, Pic Saint-Loup is one of the must-do hikes in the region. Accessible from Cazevieille, this pedestrian ascent offers a complete escape, filled with Mediterranean scents, clear views, and a terrain that is both wild and demanding.
Technical sheet for the hike
Departure : parking lot of Cazevieille, official starting point of the ascent.
Distance : ~6 km round trip.
Elevation gain : + 360-370 meters.
Duration : ~2h30, depending on pace and stops.
Difficulty : moderate to sustained — stony terrain, rocky passages, sometimes steep switchbacks.
What you will discover along the way
From the very first steps, the path rises through the garrigue: a typically Mediterranean vegetation where junipers, cades, green oaks, strawberry trees, rosemary, and wild thyme blend together. The scents of the South accompany the walk, rhythmic with the song of cicadas and the breath of the wind in the rocks.
Higher up, the path becomes more rocky. The view gradually opens up to the perched villages and the vineyards of the Grand Pic Saint-Loup, forming a patchwork of greens and ochres. Looking up, one can see the summit cross that dominates the landscape: an iconic visual marker of the region.
The last section of the trail, steeper, winds between the white limestone rocks. The effort is quickly rewarded: at the summit, at 658 meters above sea level, the panorama opens up to 360°.
You can distinguish the Mediterranean, Mount Aigoual, Larzac, and Mount Ventoux on clear days.
At your feet, the dizzying cliffs plunge down to the plain, while the Chapel of Saint Joseph and the cross of Pic Saint-Loup recall the symbolic and spiritual significance of the place.
Here, everything invites contemplation: the raw beauty of the relief, the contrast between sky and garrigue, and this unique sensation of being at the heart of Occitanie, between land and sea.
The viewpoints and sunsets
