Valentine's Day is an annual celebration held on February 14 that today associates love and romance. It is named after Saint Valentine, a martyr of the 3rd century whose legend says he defied the ban on marriages imposed by the Roman emperor by secretly uniting couples, and was executed on that day. 


The association of this day with the expression of affectionate feelings dates back to the Middle Ages, when poets like Geoffrey Chaucer linked the date to romantic love, gradually popularizing the tradition of sending messages or cards to loved ones.
