The village of Rouet is in the heart of the garrigue, on the edge of the causse de l'Hortus, not far from the Juoilles menhir and the Rocher du Causse.

More than 6,000 years ago, men settled on the Causse de l'Hortus to take advantage of the conditions that were favourable for agriculture and livestock breeding.

In the midst of these innumerable vestiges, bearers of paganism, a church was built in the 12th century to preach the Christian faith. Built on the top of a hill, the building stands alone in the centre of a group of hamlets and scattered farmhouses; surrounded by its medieval cemetery, it dominates an unusual landscape.

Further down, the Lamalou river flows by, and its waters used to drive the horizontal wheel of a grain mill, now transformed into a dwelling house.

It is also on the commune of Rouet that part of the ruins of the castle of Vivieures stands (the other part being on Valflaunès). In a dominant position above the combe de Fambétou, this fortress faces the castle of Montferrand and still asserts with determination the strength of the royal power in the face of the power of the counts-bishops of Melgueil.
