Houses of the Consuls
The Museum of Arts and Archaeology, formerly known as the Prehistory Museum of Matelles, is a symbolic place in the territory of the Grand Pic Saint-Loup.
A testimony of history
The archaeological research on the territory of Grand Pic Saint-Loup was initiated in the 1950s. Great figures of archaeology conducted work there: Henry de Lumley, Jean Arnal, Jean Guilaine, Henri Canet, Pierre Pannoux…
Without forgetting its vocation of preserving the archaeological collection, in a completely rethought scenography, the Maison des Consuls wishes to open up to other themes, focused on man as a factor of evolution, in interaction with his environment, and his ability to shape his living space.
This unprecedented meeting at the Maison des Consuls between art and our departmental heritage testifies to a new cultural approach where past and present merge harmoniously.
A place to discover all year round
The permanent collection of the Maison des Consuls consists of the results of the excavations undertaken by the archaeologist Pierre Pannoux in the immediate surroundings of Matelles, notably the Suquet Cocoulières cave, the Roubiac site, or that of Bois-Martin.
This collection is supplemented throughout the year by temporary exhibitions that further open artistic perspectives in this place.

The Pierre Pannoux Fund
The archaeological fund includes 3500 individual pieces (out of a total of 18000).
It consists of archaeological furniture (pottery, tools, flint, and jewelry) and remains of paleolithic animals (bear teeth, bones of aurochs, horse, chamois, reindeer, and saiga antelope).
The collection offers a broad overview of the Prehistory of the northern Montpellier garrigue, from the Upper Paleolithic to the final Neolithic.
The entire collection and the museum's archives are made visible via a touchscreen.
