An ecosystem to preserve
An ecosystem to preserve
The Lez hosts a rare fish, discovered in 1964: The Chabot of the Lez (Cottus Petiti), a small fish from the family of cottids. It swims little and hides between the stones: it is therefore difficult to find. Curiously, this fish exists only in this source: the Department thus has the important responsibility to ensure the conservation of this species.
It also shelters two other fish that have high heritage value: the Loche of Languedoc and the European Eel, as well as two fish of community interest: the Blageon and the Toxostome.
The Hérault
Born at the foot of the Mont Aigoual massif in the Cévennes, the river Hérault cuts through gorges or deep valleys these limestone plateaus, known as causses.
Its long wild and solitary course stretches over more than 25 km, before the river suddenly opens up in the plains at the Devil's Bridge.

The source of the Lez
The Lez, a small river that flows into the Mediterranean Sea, measures no less than 28.5 km and has its source at Saint-Clément de-Rivière.
This source is peaceful in nature, except during the Cévennes episodes that occur in the autumn and winter seasons. In summer, bathers are allowed to access the source, but only if they ensure respect for the fauna and flora.
The source of the Lez is an area protected by Natura 2000, a network gathering numerous natural or semi-natural European sites containing exceptional fauna and flora.
