On the causse de Pompignan, austere, wild vegetation abounds with garrigue plants such as asphodel and juniper.

Randonnée les Asphodéles - Grand Pic Saint-Loup Tourisme 2

In the heart of nature and the history of glassmakers.

Walk in the footsteps of the master glassmakers of yesteryear, on the path they took to sell their wares. The Hortus plateau, where you are standing, is the site of many glassworks, including Couloubrines and Mas de Baumes.
These foundries existed thanks to the presence of the surrounding woods, which provided the primordial element for the design of glass materials.

The Asphodèles hike thus blends the budding nature of spring (the flowers are in bloom around May) and heritage, with several charbonnières and burial sites still visible along the way.

Starting point: Mas de Baumes, Ferrières-les-Verreries

Reach the staircase at the bottom of the parking lot, then cut the path lined with walls, enter the meadow and walk around the picketing area to the right (testimony to the agricultural activity of the Mas de Baume; one part was reserved for stacking, the second was used for threshing cereal grains; it was in use until the mid-20th century).

Take the staircase between the two low walls.

After the sheepfold...

Turn right into the oak wood, following the natural slabs. Pass two paths on the right and take the third.

It passes the "cachette des Verriers", continues for 100 m and comes to a charcoal-burning hut.

Return to the path...

Follow the signs and cairns winding between holm and white oaks. Pass a lime kiln, a charcoal-burning hut and a dolmen.

Cross the wide track leading to Mas de Baumes, climb up into the woods and pass two shepherd's turrets. Continue on stony, unstable ground. At the skilfully restored wall, take the track on the left to the outskirts of Mas de Baumes.

On the path.

Turn right onto the well-marked path at the edge of the wood, then cross the meadow. Cross the road and continue straight ahead, bordering another meadow. Continue along the path (wash-house on the right), then cross two low walls.
