Viols-le-Fort - 1 - Grand Pic Saint-Loup

To discover a village where the Middle Ages and prehistory meet, a stopover in Viols-le-Fort can be an opportunity to get close to a unique heritage and culture.

Coming from the Cévennes, to return to the city of Montpellier by the bush roads, you can take the road through Viols-le-Fort.

The village is entrenched behind its medieval rampart and the surrounding area is full of prehistoric remains, some of which are accessible by hiking.

The village is home to a number of craftsmen and women, who have made pottery, sculpture, leatherwork and clothing design their own.

The medieval enclosure was built at the beginning of the 15th century, during the Hundred Years' War, to shelter the inhabitants who were frightened by the hordes of Rovers.

High and dark, it hides houses with medieval bases rich in architectural details.

The church, for example, was almost entirely rebuilt on Romanesque foundations in the 19th century.

From the car park next to the tambourine court, a footpath gives access to the surrounding countryside invaded by fragrant scrubland.

A dolmen, an oval tomb decorated with a statue-menhir mark out the itinerary which winds between the dry stone walls formerly used daily by the numerous flocks of sheep of the sector.

It is even possible to reach the village préhistorique de Cambous.
