The village tells its story…

Viols-le-Fort is mentioned for the first time in the 12th century under the forms of Volio (1109) and Voil (1127).

The name of the municipality has evolved over the centuries, before adopting its current form in the 18th century. The origin of the name remains subject to debate: some researchers suggest a derivation from the Gallo-Roman personal name Vocullius, while others evoke a confusion with the Occitan word viòl, meaning "path" or "alley".

At the beginning of the 15th century, during the Hundred Years' War, the inhabitants built a fortified enclosure to protect themselves from incursions by brigands. This enclosure, high and dark, still surrounds the heart of the village, offering an impressive testament to medieval architecture.
